February Wraps Up as We Leap into
Spring...
Many great
things happening on the project...
"We revamped the castle...it took a few late nights but now
we feel we have done the Craigdarrock Castle justice.

"This beautiful jewel in our city deserves the workmanship
that only Mr. Piercy can give! After much scoring, cutting, and
nipping the castle has emerged. Mr. Piercy has effectively used
one and two-point perspective to create the illusion of our castle.
We know the Dunsmuir's would have been proud!

Many classes have come in to work on the Mosaic. This is Mrs. Beacham's
oral ESL class of International students working on the project."

"These students are from Korea, Japan and
Spain"

"The day we've all been waiting for..... The terrazzo is to
be removed! It had to be jack hammered out of the middle piece of
the floor, this picture here shows the districts masonry specialist,
Ralph Harvey with the jackhammer and tools need for this happen.
Jerry Holt was also on hand to help.

Great thanks go out to School District #61 Maintained
Crew!"

The Elders Come to Continue
the Community Unity...
"We were very happy to have three lovely ladies,
Erma Dickinson, Ivy Ball and Anne Radcliff, to come for a visit
to our classroom for our 3rd to last workshop. The elderly folks
came from the Craigdarrock Care home where 18 residents 'live'.
Christina Scott brought the ladies over in her car."

It was really moving to hear Christina talk about
the differences between young and old, about being full of knowledge
and being full of wisdom. She said the students don't yet have wisdom
and "you won't really know until you are sitting in these chairs."
She said such lovely words we are all almost in tears. "When
generations join hands knowing that we all have needs it helps to
generate a good sense of community and an understanding". She
continued to speak for a few moments and really engaged us all with
her wise words, " to bond lives to community and build the
gap between age groups" Really the whole purpose of Mosaic
the City projects.
Christina then asked the elders if they would like
to add anything, and Erma Dickinson said "Be will to accept
life as it comes along" Totally perfect for this project :)

"They seemed happy to come over for the morning
workshop to help to share their wisdom and to see the mosaic for
the first time!"

The communications between the generations was
wonderful to watch. These ladies have so much to share with us and
we were ready to soak it all in.

It was wonderful to have the students teach their
new mosaic skills to the elders. Not to mention so amazing to see
these women in their golden years willing to learn new things from
the young.

"We had a great visit, and really enjoyed
their company and shared insights to approaching life in general."

A special thanks to Ms. Taylor for her work continuing the community
unity between the school and our elders. It was very moving to have
created this community interaction for us all to share.

"This photo shows one of our three French Immersion teachers,
Madame Manon putting the final touches on the Fleur de Lisse, which
is now securely in place in the of foundation our school, just like
French Immersion!

This photo is a picture of Robin Shenkenfelder
one of CMS's Special Student Assistants. She is pointing out her
Robin, in the 'summer tree'."

"This sweet little bird reminds me of Mrs.
S's garden, which is a masterpiece of miniature! She had to re-create
this little gal twice-- as the first time it got lost in and amongst
all the other bits of ceramic tiles. Thanks for reworking the piece!
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Mrs. Beacham came up with the idea of drilling holes to insert her
ceramic beads into the heads of the birds to create the illusion
of an eye."

"The process involves using a diamond carbide
drill bit and then securing it with epoxy resin and then sanding
it down flush. The first bird to use it was Rae and Larry Dibnah's
Eagle, next it was the two turtledoves of piece who live above the
school and then Robin's robin."

Later that same Evening...

We had the final community workshop. "Pastor
Ron came out to help build the "church" imagery into the
Mosaic. We were very happy and inspired to see such attention to
details."

Later Mrs. Beacham put in the only glass pieces into the mosaic
to depict the stained-glass window effect for all to recognize the
international symbol of a place of worship.

Many people come out to contribute to the mosaic and together we
are creating the most amazing piece of Community Public Art!!!!!!!

Annetta Probst made her mark again by re-doing
her little turtle. With the help of one of our student team members,
Coby Stubel, the turtle moved positions in the mosaic to now have
her own section.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

The mosaic really is almost completed with only
a few areas are left to be worked on.

It was really nice to see so many hands working in unison on the
project. To see so many ideas and creative juices flowing together
in this one of kind mosaic.
