Central Journal 11
March 10th - Almost Done...

What a big day for the project. The mosaic is almost totally done, only a few final details to complete.

In the morning the class spend their remaining time in this enrichment project:

Journaling,

completing their paper mosaics,

helping on final details for the mosaic

and finishing the thank you cards.

We had a special visit from author Sue Fast from Island Parent Magazine.

She spent some time with each of the project leaders finding out the details about this amazing Community Unity project. The article will be in April's Edition. So look out for it next month. A special thanks to the Stubels for inviting Sue to the project.

Then after lunch we had a whole student body assembly. We invited our various community partners to thank them properly. It is very important that everyone who knows about this project understands that it is the work of many hands; many volunteer hours, many donations of time, money and materials that make these project possible.

Remember that no Community Unity project would exist without the generous support of the community groups, organizations and neighbours that make up the community.

Each partnering group or person was presented with a handmade thank you card, signed by all the enrichment students and project leaders. So many thank yous to all these amazing participants.

Mrs. Beacham and Mr. Piercy put together the most amazing video of the project, with images from around the community that represented the items in the mosaic. After some technical difficulty we were totally awed by the amount of creativity and energy put into this production. It was very cool to see the morph from true-life image to mosaic created images. It was a very powerful presentation. Many of us look forward to seeing it again soon. Great Job!!

At the assembly we had a special guest, historian John Adams, who gave a brief, and I mean brief, talk about Central's history.

It is very interesting to learn all about the way this area used to be, and all the evolution that has happened at this very location. A special thank you to Mr. Adams along with an apology for having to cut his talk short. We all look forward to hearing more about this community's interesting past, and hope to have the opportunity to listen to Mr. Adams again.

It was really great to see all the Community Unity happening. To have the whole school body together to support the project. It was even better to have Sherri Robb Director of Instruction for SD6, lend her support to the project. Thanks again to all the people who have made this project a success!!!!

Later that same evening:

The Tech team met up at the project for a potluck meal and some serious tile spacing.

The whole mosaic now needs to be properly spaced for mounting, and grouting. As explained early on in the project each piece of mosaic needs to be ¼ of an inch away from its neighbour. This is necessary to provide space for the motor and grout to adhere to each tiny ceramic piece. So we all spent careful concentration to create the space needed. It is amazing how much work this part takes.

At our potluck we had a visit from two more community friends. Lisa and her son Greg spend some time helping us with the fine details. These two are part of the Mosaic the City's project in the Oaklands area. They were very happy to see the mosaic in all its glory and totally impressed by the richness of the almost finished project. Special thanks to Greg for his great skilled knife wielding.

Only a few nights left to complete these last details then the mosaic will be laid in the entrance, ready for all to enjoy. We are planning to have the mosaic mounted and grouted over spring break, ready for the students return.

We also have set a tentative date of May 28th or 29th for the celebration. :) Stay tuned for more information.

Coming soon!!!!!!!!!!!
