Feb 11 - Building gets Started
Today we got to start building the mosaic. We divided the enrichment class into two groups.

The first group stayed in the art room with Ms. Taylor and worked on paper mosaic thank you cards, for us to use through out the project.
Enrichment News Feb. 11, 2004
In Enrichment, Central students were busy making thank you cards
and starting to cut the mosaic tiles. The thank you cards were awesome!
They will go to the fire department who gave us a check for $400,
to the Craigdarroch Care Home for helping us with our design for
the mosaic, to the Craigdarroch Castle workers for a wonderful tour
of the castle, to the Grace Lutheran Church for holding our design
workshop and to the many others who have helped bring unity to our
community through their contributions to this mosaic project.

The second group came to the clay studio to see the final design and learn more about the "how-to's" of mosaicking.

Through out the project we all make sure we are having almost too much fun!
Half way through workshop the groups changed rooms to give all the students the same opportunity to participate. We had a few parents come to the workshop and lend their creativity to the project.

We also continued to work on the design, as the total space was not yet filled with ideas. We left space so people could continue to add their inspiration to the final mosaic. Central's First nation teacher, Ray Forsberg, came up and added some aboriginal designs to the mosaic. He added a very stylized moon to shine above Craigdarroch castle on the left side of the mosaic. On the right side he designed a likeness of the ____________building, which is at the BC Museum downtown.

For Mosaic the City this is much needed cultural participation, as we are really hoping each project provides the opportunity for many different cultures to work together and share their distinct styles.

We all worked together to begin laying pieces in the mosaic. The design begins taking shape.
Community Unity Workshop

That evening we had our second community workshop. This was the
first opportunity for the community to place pieces on the mosaic.
A few parents come out to participate and share in the community spirit. Many teachers came out to add design ideas and work on the mosaic.

The principle also came by for a while and put her mark on the mosaic. The shop teacher, Mr.Peirce, video recorded this workshop, which will be fun to watch later.

At this community workshop on Feb 11th where teachers
and volunteers were hard at work, I was surprised to see the New
VI appear. I was interviewed as a parent and asked what this project
was about and what community meant to me. I did not know the VI
News was coming. I suppose, had I known they were coming I would
have not been able to utter a word, but, there was no time to get
tongue-tied. I was fine and all came out well. It was great exposure
for the project. I hear they will be back.

We got a visit from Laura Acton of the New VI television station. She recorded a live feed for her show "the Good Life" where she plugged this project very well; it was on the six o'clock news. Great coverage.
Community Building Workshop Feb. 11, 2004
Being involved in my children's school has always been a priority
in my life. When my daughter, Katherine, told me about the mosaic
project being undertaken at her school through "Mosaic the
City", it became an ultimate experience. I am so impressed
with the idea of "community unity". It's a great opportunity
to meet many wonderful people gathered together, united as one to
create a work of art that conceptualizes the heart and minds of
a community.

We are having a lot of fun simply being together, making local news together and creating wonderful art- together. The project is coming along nicely.
