Week Four

Mosaic building Workshops:

Mosaic Workshop 4

This week of the project starts out great. We have a wonderful article in Monday Magazine showing all the dates and details of the project. We were on the Daily show on Shaw TV for a few days. And there is also coverage in the Times Colonist and the Vic News. Some people have heard about the project from word of mouth and others have seen it online from Shylene.com. The turn out this week is up and we almost doubled the number of participants.

There have been more great interactions between participants. We are learning from each other and it is so great to lead a project where so many people want to learn and share. Many people talk to Shylene about what products are used to mosaic. Questions regarding the cement board, glue, type of ceramic(s), grouting, where to find the nippers and other mosaic how-to's keep Shylene teaching all day.

The volunteer turn out has improved. A special thanks to the few who keep coming back, for without their help projects like this can not happen.

Melanie (on left) , a new comer to Victoria, is one of our volunteer helpers.

Shylene and an elder gentleman had a lovely time working on the cultural representation in the Maple Leaf mosaic. They spent a good while sharing about the history of Canada, the state of current youth/elder relations and the changing times. It was for this purpose Shylene chose community, public art for her project.

.

These ladies started filling in the culture and nature parts of the Maple Leaf. Careful mosaic. Nipping was done to create perfect round music notes and to find the words to go into the book of knowledge.

Mosaic the City projects provide the opportunity for generations to come together, to share and learn with each other in a creative, fun way.

Mosaic Workshop 5

The Victoria mosaic started taking shape. It was fun to watch the reactions to the materials used. It's extremely rewarding to teach people how to use things that are broken to create art instead of trash.

Watching the evolution of this form of art has always kept Shylene in mosaic. As the project progresses so does the community spirit and it is showing in the work produced.

Rock Solid Foundation's Kim Coyle has played a huge part in this project as the LAP Leader for the first Mosaic the City Project. It is with this type support and fun that make projects like these successful. Having a good time is what community art is all about. Oh-Lay!

Mosaic Workshop 6

It is fun to watch the interactions betwen friends and family as they decided just which piece works best.

While some groups work on the Victoria mosaic, other participants continue to contribute to the designs. We hope to carry the unused designs on to the next Mosaic the City projects, as we feel passing along the energy and creativity is another way to connect the all the projects together.

By the end of the second week of mosaicking we had the first three mosaics almost complete.

The Maple Leaf has some filling work in the center and the frame still needs to be completed.

All in all, another great week on the project!!

The Dogwood mosaic is almost ready for grout - just a few more detailed checks to ensure all the pieces are securely fastened and it's done.

"Victoria" is almost completed, only a few pieces left to glue into place, then we are all ready for next weeks final two mosaics to start.
